Walterboro

Known as "The Front Porch of the Lowcountry" this sleepy little town has an estimated population of 5,400 residents.

Walterboro is located in Colleton County, just 50 miles west of Charleston & 42 miles north of Beaufort. This little town is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city known for its old home and considered the best destination for antique collectors.

Walterboro was established in 1783 as a summer refuge for native farmers and agriculturists. Since, plantations along the coast were highly susceptible to malaria during the summer months, planters settled in towns like Walterboro that were elevated and less infested by mosquitos. Among those farmers were the Walter brothers who settled in Hickory Pine, (a hilly area covered in pine & hickory tress). Eventually, the city was renamed in their honor.
